kajeet Family Plan

December 16, 2009

by Carol Politi

How much does it cost to get kajeet for an entire family? Combine the new Parent Plans we are testing with our kid-optimized rate plans and it’s the most affordable solution around.

For example:

1) Family with 3 communicators (e.g., family with a parent and two teens who are all social): ~$80/month

  • Parent uses the kajeet unlimited Talk and Text plan – $49.99 per month
  • Each teen uses our 60 anytime minute/unlimited text plan: $14.99 per month per line

Total? Only ~$80/month for 3 lines for heavy communicators! And the teens can use more minutes for only 10 cents per minute (or they can upgrade to our $19.99 plan and get an additional 90 anytime minutes for just $5 more).

2) Family with 3 light communicators (e.g., a mom with modest usage and two kids that each use 20 minutes and 20 texts per month): ~$36/month

  • Parent uses the kajeet Parent 500 minutes and 100 texts plan: $19.99 per month
  • Each kid uses the kajeet $4.99 Basic Plan (with 10 included minutes). They take advantage of the low 10 cent rate for additional minutes/texts to purchase 10 extra minutes and 20 texts. Each spends only $7.99/month

Total? Only ~$36 per month for 3 lines! Plus, you can change plans at any time – and there are no annual contracts.

Who wants to worry about what cell phone company their friends (or kids’ friends) have? And who wants to be concerned with exactly how many minutes everyone in the family is using at any point in time just to make sure you don’t get hit with expensive overages?

Those days are ending with affordable pay as you go plans. And kajeet allows you to manage them all from a single account. Simple.

What’s the catch? Well, for now this is a test of kajeet Parent Plans, so it is a limited time offer. You must sign up for a Parent Plan before 1/26/10 to take advantage of these plans. If you are a new customer, this means you need to purchase by 1/5/09 in order to get your phone, activate it, and select the plan.

If you want to take advantage of our parent plan options, call care at 1-866-452-5338 to purchase your phone or select your plan.  (If you prefer to purchase online, select “this is a gift” during purchase and call care to activate and get put on these Parent Test plans.)  As always, if things go well with the test we consider making these plans part of our standard rate plan options.

Thoughts? We appreciate your comments and feedback on all our plans.

kajeet for Parents?

December 8, 2009

by Carol Politi

We hear all the time from parents interested in getting service from kajeet for themselves.  They have kajeet for their kids, like the phones, want a service without a contract, and would like to manage multiple lines from a single account.   Many adults also like our controls – they want to block certain numbers and stop the phone from waking them up at night!

The challenge is that our plans are heavy on texting and light on talk.  For good reason!  Kids tend to text far more than they talk.

Well, we are running a test to see if all these parent inquiries really represent interest.   Here are the plans we are testing:

  • 500 anytime minutes and 100 text messages for $19.99
  • 1,000 anytime minutes and 100 text messages for $29.99
  • Unlimited talk and text for $50.00.

All of this with a high quality nationwide digital network that delivers some of the best coverage around.  This test is going to run through January 26th, 2010.

Existing kajeet customers can take advantage of these plans by calling kajeet customer care at 1-866-452-5338.  You do not need to purchase a new handset to take advantage of these plans.

New customers can purchase any kajeet phone through customer care and ask the care agent to put you on one of these plans.  Customers that want to purchase a new phone can do so through our care sales team at 1-888-525-3383.

Are these plans of interest to you?  We would welcome your feedback!

A number of our customers are taking advantage of our new phone selection (and the holiday gifting season) to upgrade their child’s phone (or their own!).   We made this process much easier recently by launching the ability to switch your phone from our website.    This post describes how this is done.

If you are an existing customer and you purchase a new kajeet phone, you can move your number to it (i.e., “switch your phone”) online as follows:

1.  Login to kajeet.com (www.kajeet.com)

2.  Select “switch a phone” from your logged in home page as shown below.

You will then be asked to select the phone you would like to upgrade (in the event you have multiple phones on the account) and for the ESN or MEID of your new phone (this is a unique number that physically identifies a phone – we show you how to find this!).

We know each kajeet customer that purchases a new kajeet phone is making a decision to keep kajeet as their service provider.  We appreciate your business.  I hope our new online phone upgrade feature makes the process of upgrading your phone easier.

Please comment here to let us know if this is easy to use, and how it might be improved.

Yes, it is $14.99!

November 23, 2009

by Carol Politi

Yes, we have introduced a plan for $14.99 per month that includes 60 minutes of Talk time and Unlimited Texting!  We have received a lot of great feedback on this plan so I wanted to highlight this plan specifically – it really does deliver on its promise.  It is a perfect plan for most tweens and young teens (and great for the rest of us that prefer texting to talking!).

What do you do if you want to take advantage of this great monthly price, but would really prefer your child not be texting all night?   Simply use kajeet parental controls to limit texting to those times when it will not be a distraction.  You can turn off calls and texts at night, during school, etc. (while still allowing parent and emergency numbers to be called/texted).

Do you use the 14.99 plan?  Please comment here and let us know how it is working for you.

kajeet Mobile Web – New!

November 13, 2009

by Carol Politi

We just launched some great new mobile web services!   This new offering provides significantly more flexibility for those that want to surf the web from their kajeet device and gives parents the ability to select the level of access they think works best for their family.

The kajeet Navigator (i.e., the browser on your phone) now has a set of free sites, a set of kid-friendly sites selected by kajeet (these cost money to access), access to social networking and IM (these cost money and are in a separately controlled category), and a category that allows you to access the web freely without controls.  The new Feature Manager on kajeet.com allows parents to control the access their kids will have to various sites on the mobile web.  Login to kajeet.com and select Configurator/Feature Manager to see the full set of options.

What does it cost?

The web services are charged based on use – $0.35 per 0.25 megabyte (each 0.25MB expires 24 hours after purchase).   What that means is that we charge you for 0.25 MB and that this is good for a day.  (Some carriers charge in MB, for comparison purposes this equates to $1.40/MB).

What on earth does 0.25 Mbyte get you and why did we take this approach?  First, it gets you:

– About 10 mobile-friendly web pages

– About 2-3 full web pages (i.e., non-mobile optimized pages)

Why did we take this approach?  It is nice to be able to, for a very small cost, casually browse the web – e.g., look at the weather once in a while.  Many of our customers just want a bit of web access and they don’t want to buy a big bundle.   (For those that are very heavy users, we will add a bundle option in the future!)

Please note: it is still free to browse our Navigator store for ringtones, games, and applications – and all kajeet users still get access to select free mobileweb sites! Access to your “MyKajeet” is also free.

We would love some input on this – so please comment here on the new features.  Your comments will directly reach our product team and they will listen to you!  We could specifically use help in the following areas:

1.  What sites would you like to see in the “free” category.  Our plan is to consistently make available at least 3 sites as part of our base service.  These need to be appropriate for kids of all ages.  We would appreciate customer feedback to help us decide if we have made the right choices.

2.  Do you know of other kid appropriate sites that should be specifically listed and made available in our “Other Great Sites” category?  This is a category of sites that again need to be appropriate for kids of all ages.  This category is a bit light at the moment and we would like to make it more robust.

Please comment here to let us know what you think, and to let us know how you would like to see these features evolve.  Thanks!

Text Paks on the Phone

November 2, 2009

By Carol Politi

We offer a variety of ways to purchase Text Paks – including the option to purchase these on the handset itself.  Because we assume that a child is the user of the handset, it is only possible to make one time (i.e., non-recurring) Text Pak purchases from a kajeet handset.

There are three options for one-time Text Pak purchases available on the handset:

1.  200 texts for $4.99

2.  1,000 texts for $9.99

3.  Unlimited texts for $19.99.

This ability to fund these one-time Text Paks from the wallet allows you to provide an allowance in your son or daughter’s kajeet wallet and let them decide how they want to spend it – talking, texting, playing games, etc.  (Note that your calls will always go through – even if they run out of their allowance – if you fund your Parent Wallet).

The handset purchase options are especially ideal if your son or daughter may not be purchasing a Pak every month.  For example, if they know they will text more over a holiday when they are not with their friends or if they want the ability to spend their phone allowance on texts one month and games the next.

Are you or your child using the handset purchase option?   Please let us know what other tools you would like to see on the handset.

Back to School Prep

August 27, 2009

by Carol Politi

TimeManagerAs you are populating your calendar with all the school activities for the fall, take a few minutes to add school blocks and holidays to the TimeManager for your kid’s kajeet phone (go to kajeet.com, Configurator, TimeManager to do this).  You can block calls and messages during school hours and after certain times of night to make sure your kids focus on school and are not interrupted at night with texts or calls from friends.   (Note that your emergency or “always allowed” numbers will get through a calendar block).

This is also a great time to get familiar with the kajeet.com site – especially Account Activity which gives you a detailed list of how the phone is being used at various times of day.  It will let you know if your child is using picture messaging and whether it might be useful to do some coaching on cell phones and pictures.  If you have a teen that is driving, you can check Account Activity to make sure the phone is not being used while your teen is driving.

Good luck with back to school!

In Case of Emergency

August 13, 2009

by Carol Politi

Originally developed by first responders in the UK, In Case of Emergency – ICE – is a system whereby people program their cell phones with “In Case of Emergency” contact information that first responders (and others) can use.   A great article on this was published recently in the Cookeville Times – “Cell Phones Keep Kids Safe“.

Back to school is a great time to program your child’s phone with ICE contacts.  In the “name” field on the contact list in the phone, enter ICE plus the name of the person (ICE Mom, ICE Dad, ICE Grandma, etc.).  Come to think of it – perhaps we should all program our phones with ICE contacts!
