Where Schools Are Headed

August 28, 2012

Schools and teachers know all too well that students love to bring their mobile devices into the classroom. With advents in technology, however, more and more educational institutions are using this fact to their advantages.

This article in the Technology section of Newsday voices a paradigm shift in the world of education: America’s schools, the perennial victims of budget cuts, want to immerse their students and faculty in the online-learning revolution, but don’t necessarily have the money to buy every student a mobile device; many are starting to ask students to bring their own devices to school instead. This strategy, the article affirms, has proven to be engaging for the kids and not as cumbersome as some worried it might be.

The concept of mobile devices in the educational sphere raises myriad questions about appropriate use, safety, and security — that’s where kajeet comes in! Kajeet School Guard™ is the first free online tool that allows Bring-Your-Own-Device institutions to manage Internet access in the classroom. Parents assign their kid’s affordable kajeet device to a filtering group customized by their local educational system, which takes effect during school hours. Learn more here!

Betty Casey, managing editor of “Tulsa Kids,” recently appeared on Channel KTUL in Tulsa, Oklahoma to provide parents with a checklist of new products that will lend themselves to a safe and enjoyable school year for both parents and kids. In this local news segment from metro-Atlanta, 11-Alive news highlights the adoption of Bring-Your-Own-Technology (BYOT) in Fayette County Schools.  The report also includes an example of a student who was so dismayed by the policies in his high school and so inspired by mobile technology that he went on to found his own company, the iSchool Initiative.  As CEO of this rapidly expanding entity, he is speaking about students and the use of mobile technology in schools all across the world – while simultaneously completing his graduate degree in Education.

Notably, at the end of the news segment, the question about inappropriate use is raised.  The school district has restricted access to what it considers inappropriate sites on the school WiFi network – but what about the student’s own mobile broadband connectivity?

Kajeet launched School Guard™ specifically to address this concern.  The program is FREE for schools to enroll in and allows the school or district to establish an appropriate use policy and to define their school hours.  Parents can then opt-in to allow the school’s policy to govern what is accessible via Kajeet 3G service!  Kajeet already provides the most robust Parental Controls in the wireless industry and parents are using these controls to manage when and with whom their kids can talk and text – during school or at bedtime, for example.

Now, with Kajeet School Guard™, parents can truly cooperate with their school to ensure appropriate use of a smart phone or tablet during school hours!  Importantly, its free for schools and free for parents on Kajeet!  Schools can sign up now at http://kajeet.com/byod and parents can join Kajeet or enroll their current Kajeet device(s) at http://kajeet.com!

Mary Burt-Godwin of the “Mama Mary Show” recently stopped by the morning show on Fox 5 in San Diego to talk about her favorite back-to-school must haves — and kajeet was included!

Mary raved about the variety of kajeet smart phones available, as well as the free parental controls. Click here to watch Mary’s segment and hear what she has to say about kajeet!

Kajeet supports DC SCORES, one of the largest development organizations in Washington DC, to provide free soccer and arts camps for local kids. The 2012 Couch to Camp program has given approximately 200 kids the opportunity to attend summer camp for free!

On July 26, the kajeet staff had the privilege of spending a whole day with the awesome kids and counselors from DC SCORES. We kicked off the day with an educational scavenger hunt inside the National Gallery of Art and then worked our way over to the National Mall for some pick-up soccer! Check out these pictures from the outing and see what kajeet is all about!
